book club - plug in that car

I'm about halfway through
Plug-in Hybrids - the Cars that will Recharge America by Sherry Boschert. Sherry came to speak at hybridfest at the Dane county fair, and I enjoyed her presentation so much that I needed to learn more. The book is a good find, full of factual history about electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars in this country. It discusses the realities of using hydrogen as an energy transfer mechanism and generating electricity from both clean and dirty sources. But mostly it educates about what we can achieve with the technology already at hand, and what it will take to put current technology on the mass market.
I'm posting before finishing so I can share part of Marc Geller's story documented by Sherry: then al Qaeda attacked the United States on September 11. To Geller, the connection with oil was plain: We buy their oil, enriching anti-democratic regimes that in turn finance radical Islam, then we have to pay again to fight them.
For reference, I've also heard good things about
Who Killed the Electric Car, but have not seen it yet.

Well, the American manufacturers had the technology and chose not market it to an eager audience. So two Japanese manufacturers, Toyota and Honda stepped up to the plate. Now that they're desperately trying to catch up, we find out that China wasn't waiting for them to take the lead.
C'mon guys, what's wrong with LEADING? You used to be able to do it.

Once again, we must look overseas for leadership. Here's what Israel is doing on the electric car front:

At least now we have the prospect of getting out from under oil-only Republican energy policy, and working towards something better. I just hope the masses understand that there are no quick and easy solutions to the massive problems that have taken so long to create.
